How the numbers on this site are calculated
USDA's Foundation Foods dataset doesn't report energy (calories) the same way for every food. Trunka handles this in three steps, applied in order:
- Direct measurement. If USDA measured and published a calorie value for the food, we show it exactly as published.
- Estimated from macronutrients. If no direct calorie measurement exists but protein, fat, and carbohydrate values do, we calculate calories using the standard Atwater formula (protein × 4 + carbohydrate × 4 + fat × 9). These values are marked "estimated" on the product page.
- Not available. If neither exists, we show "—". We don't display a fabricated zero.
% Daily Value figures use the U.S. FDA's official Daily Values (the same reference used on U.S. nutrition labels), not a number we invented.
All figures are per 100g of the raw or as-analyzed product, matching how USDA reports it — cooking, trimming, and preparation will change actual values.
